do magazines influence women in everything they do? or do women set the trends and lifestyles for magazines?

Im currently studying magazine publishing in the uk, i am researching a topic of womens magazines and would be grateful for any feedback

No matter how independent women become, magazines will not all of a sudden use them for the advertising of expensive cars or office accessories. Women will constantly be used for adverts of domestic and beauty products. I’m a media studies student and as a part of my textual analysis have had to analyse a lot of magazine adverts. Magazines are made to make us aspire to the “ideal” image that is created by celebrities and human barbie dolls. Media definitely influences what choices we make when it comes to purchasing products, but when it comes to choosing “the perfect man” or how to “look fabulous”, it’s usually a matter of personal choice plus influence from the media (unless you’re so insecure you imitate the images you see in magazines). Of course it would be great if women could be represented as the independent, upper working class citizens they are increasingly becoming, however, magazine content and advertising doesn’t glamourise it because it’s not something that women can achieve by purchasing a product.. it is a lifestyle.
